Armstrong World Industries has a great opportunity for an Associate Designer at our corporate headquarters in Lancaster, PA within our Product Design Group to support our dynamic team and work collaboratively to develop inspiring ceiling solutions for our customers.  This designer will contribute to a variety of programs, from early stage research and ideation, through concept and product development, and all the way to production and commercialization.  This role requires a motivated design thinker that can inspire others, generate new to the world concepts, and then bring them to life by collaborating with cross-functional partners.

 

To be successful as a key member of this team, you must utilize design thinking, enjoy collaborating, and influence business partners in a compelling style.  As well as, have the talent to clearly articulate your ideas through concept sketching, 2D and 3D computer modeling, and with physical prototyping and installation mockups.

 

Key responsibilities include:

-       Collaborate with internal team members in brainstorming solutions and other design focused activities in support of broader business initiatives

-       Develop creative concepts while ensuring solutions are aligned with business strategy, customer insights, and manufacturing capability

-       Actively participate in customer research, benchmarking activities, and ideation sessions

-       Support design and development activities for new ceiling system products, including new innovations, product line extensions, and existing system enhancements

-       Lead the application of design engineering best practices in developing 3D CAD models and creating/maintaining product specification drawings

-       Provide creative talent to energize project teams, advocate good design, visualize solutions, and be an enabler of new technologies

-       Provide hands-on support to build sample components and lead the physical assembly of prototype installations

 

Required Qualifications:

-       Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design

-       1-3 years of design experience including research, concept development, materials application and mechanical development

-       Passion for integrating design and technology with a desire to experiment and explore new ideas

-       Ability to synthesize customer insights, technology, and design trends into unique and meaningful solutions for the organization

-       Proactive leadership skills and the ability to identify design opportunities that can impact the business

-       Effective communication skills along with the ability to influence and collaborate with process partners in delivering great design solutions

-       A strong portfolio of diverse work that demonstrates innovative solutions, creative thinking, and attention to detail

-       Proficient with Microsoft Office

-       Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite

-       Experience with solid modeling using parametric 3D CAD software

-       Hands on skills in prototyping and building large scale mockup installations

 

Desired Qualifications:

-       Experience using Autodesk Inventor software

-       Experience with AutoCAD/Architectural Desktop

-       Experience with architect specified installed product

-       Experience designing sheet metal, solid wood, and veneer components

-       Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in the production of precision technical drawings, models, and documentation.
