Job Summary:

Under leadership of the Director of Central Engineering, this position will be responsible for developing engineered solutions for complex tooling such as rolls and dies, fixtures, gages, and other auxiliary equipment to facilitate the application of new and revised products in our manufacturing processes.   

 

Key focus areas are to support New Product capabilities and Manufacturing Process Effectiveness through tooling design. This will include, but is not limited to the following:

  • For rolls: Develop cross-sectional drawings of rolls, calculate strip width, produce bend progression or “flower” pattern, layout and design the roll tooling around the flower, incorporate tooling accessories, cutoff dies and pre-notch tooling.
  • For dies: Design using 3D modeling software, high-precision stamping dies and master die set for high-volume production of complex tight-tolerance products per engineering standards from assembly to detail drawings.
  • Feasibility studies and estimate tooling cost.
  • Follow and support the fabrication of tooling.
  • Participate actively in tooling testing or “debugging”.
  • Implement tooling and support initial production runs.
  • Participate actively in cost saving and effectiveness initiatives through tooling kaizen events and support teams.
  • Consistent project status communication.
  • Investigate new technologies and innovative tooling solutions.
  • Manage Engineering Change Notices (ECN).
  • Provide drafting assistance for local plant activities and tooling design.

 

This position does not have direct reports, but the individual will coordinate action plans through cross-functional teams within the WAVE organization.

Measures of Effectiveness

  • Safety Performance: Safety-first design and results, compliance to codes, and evidence of reducing risk.
  • Tooling Cost: Design tooling effectively to minimize tooling rework and identifying the most economical solution for manufacturing.
  • Tooling Timeline: Schedule tooling design work between designers and WAVE Central Tooling to minimize overall delivery time and launch projects as soon as possible.
  • Tooling Performance: Design tooling to manufacture finished products within specifications, minimizing design mistake, rework and optimizing maintenance cost.

 

Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 5 years minimum Engineering experience in roll forming, stamping, transfer and progressive tooling design/manufacturing; preferred.
  • Experience in 3D modeling/designing such as Inventor, Pro-E, SolidWorks; required.
  • Experience in a plant manufacturing environment; preferred. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft office products – Word, Excel, Outlook, Project.
  • Excellent analytical skills and experience in project management.
